First splits of the tree butt. The log is forced apart by the wedges and sledgehammer.

 

 

'first move'

It's low-tech in the back garden. Plenty of space to spread the tools and wood around. Wedges force the wood apart, with some persuasion from the mallet and sledgehammer.
